Short History

Saint Nicholas High School is a Catholic secondary school founded in 1920 by the Congregation of Holy Cross in Nagori, in Bengal (now Kaliganj Upazila, Gazipur District, Bangladesh). St Nicholas High School in Nagari, Gazipur, an industrial district of Dhaka, has been serving the people of Bangladesh for a hundred years. It was the first school established in the area, now home to millions of garment workers. Thousands of students, mostly Muslims, have had the opportunity to study in the classrooms of the missionary school. One of them was Tajuddin Ahmad, an independence fighter, and the first prime minister of Bangladesh during the War of Liberation from Pakistan (picture 3). For this reason, St Nicholas is considered as the ‘lighthouse’ of Bangladesh.
